The Facebook Super Nightmare

Super Wall on Facebook is becoming a super nightmare because of all the chain letters being spread around.

Examples:

press forward button below to see what happens

-That was posted twice on one super wall by two different people! Who believes this stuff? Nothing miraculus, magical, amazing or even remotely surprising happens when you forward a chain letter. The only thing that happens is that it gets forwarded...

Then came the Shumila Ahmed Penny Brown missing girl hoax.

Please look at the picture ,read what Her Friend

says, then forward this message on. My 21 year old Friend,

SHUMILA AHMED, is missing. She has been missing for now

two weeks. Maybe if everyone passes this on, someone

will see SHUMILA. That is how the girl from Stevens Point

was found by circulation of her picture on tv. The internet

circulates even overseas, South America, UK , and Canada

-*cut rest of chain.*

This mutation was so new in January 2008 that a search on the Snopes sit brought up no results.

-A search on Google brought up this blog, the only one found so far, so this must be where the mutation originated.

Next, I googled "the girl from Stevens Point" because the reference in the chain was so vague - what girl from Stevens Point? Where is Stevens point exactly? That and the "missing for two weeks" raised suspicions. Missing persons hoaxes such as Penny Brown seem to gravitate toward the "missing for two weeks" thing. There was not enough real info about Shumila to qualify as a real case of a missing person needing to be found. A real plea would describe the person in as much detail as possible, and give valid contact info should anyone think they have seen her, not just a "Look at the pic, pray to god and send it on to EVERYONE POSSIBLE!"

Googling the phrase "the girl from Stevens point" gave paydirt, confirmation this newest claim is in fact just the old Penny Brown hoax. Shumila's story is taken right from the Penny Brown tale, nearly word for word.
