Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader

This is a riddle chain letter. It is one of many brain-teasers, jokes, trivia and the like without the typical "Forward this on or you'll have bad luck" threats associated with chain letters. It still urges to be forwarded on, and is being forwarded all over the net as shown in this Snopes discussion so is, in fact, a chain letter - with a file attachment that is omitted here.

Subject: Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader???

I am sending this to the ones I feel can solve this 5th grade question.

Okay, when you get your answer, you have to open the attachment. The password is the answer. If you get it right, it will open and you can save your name on the document and forward it along. Have fun and good luck!

RIDDLE:

There is one bus with seven girls in it. Each girl has 7 backpacks and each backpack has seven big cats. Each big cat has seven little cats.

How many legs are there all together?

The attached file bore the name:

smarter than a 5th grader.xls

The instruction at the beginning of this chain letter is a recipe for a spammer's or hacker's delight. As if opening a strange attachment isn't risky enough, this chain tells you to enter the answer as a password to open the file, and to pass it along after saving your name inside the document.

This means your name and possibly other info about yourself will be forwarded all over the internet, to thousands of people you don't know.

You'd be lucky if that file doesn't contain malware to damage your computer as well.

With subsequent forwarding, it is likely that if malware has not yet been introduced within the file, it still might.

So, the chain letter passes itself off as looking harmless, innocent, even fun for those who like solving grade 7/9 math problems in their head, this is not a riddle at the grade five level.

However, there is potential for seriously compromising one's online life by participating in this chain.

To be smarter than a fifth grader, please don't open the file and pass on the chain.
