Myspace Chain Letters

If you've been on the net a while, chances are good you've heard of Myspace, and how people either love the site or hate it.

Myspace has become so notorious for chain letters that it is mentioned as an example in the Free Encyclopedia at Wikipedia, Chain Letter - Wikipedia and on the Urban Legends About pages and other hoax-busting sites.

It's possible many chain letters are being put on to Myspace and sent through email from The Love Chain Letter Site and others like it - sites that actually try to spread chain letters.

This page will deal with Myspace chain letters, of the hoax as well as the "bulletin" variety.

Bulletins

You may have heard of what are called Myspace bulletins, but you might not be sure what they are; if they are chain letters, why so many people are passing them around.

According to Myspace:

"Bulletins are messages from and to all your friends at once.

You can use bulletins to alert your friends about a party, things for sale, job hunts, etc."

Notice the absence of chain letters among the suggestions on how to use bulletins.

The Myspace bulletin feature isn't actually meant for passing around chain letters, which are against the Myspace terms of service. So why a site deems them as against their policy, yet does nothing about them is still a mystery.

The bulletin feature on Myspace lets a user send a message "post a bulletin" to all his/her friends on the network. It's a very handy, potentially very useful feature, if the poster has an important update, or simply wants more contact from any and all of his/her friends. In a bulletin, a person can write whatever they like.

All too often, the bulletin feature is misused by people posting chain letters instead of their own messages.

So, chain letters can and do take the form of Myspace bulletins, but bulletins shouldn't be chain letters.
